For the first time in their history, Apple has overtaken Samsung to become the top mobile phone vendors in the US. Market researchers, Strategy Analytics put it down to the strength of the iPhone 5 and a holiday season that broke records for the company.
Since 2008 Samsung have been at the top but, following on from 17.7 million iPhone sales in the fourth quarter of 2012 alone with Samsung coming in a close second with 16.8 million sales. LG remained in third place with just 4.7 million sales.
These figures could all change after the end of the first quarter of this year, even more so next quarter after the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S4. And, as the iPhone 5S isn’t due to be seeing the light for several months yet, Apple’s reign at the top could be short-lived. For the time being though they can relish their position and their 34% hold on the market.
